The Kaldreach

Somewhere far to the north, past the edge of every map that still makes sense, the world stops changing seasons. The Kaldreach is not a forest, not a country, not a single place at all. It is the largest region in the world, a vast frozen expanse that stretches across the top of very major continent broken only by the oceans it has long since swallowed in ice. It has been winter here longer than anyone has kept count. It will be winter here long after anyone stops trying.
People live here anyway. Beastfolk villages sit tucked between roots wider than houses, in valleys carved from ice, along the edges of canyons that never thaw. Whole lives are lived and lost without ever seeing a green season, because there isn't one, and there never will be. The Kaldreach does not soften for anyone.
A Land of Extremes
No two days here look the same. In one stretch, trees rise taller than anything that should be allowed to grow, ancient and half-buried in forest. Walk far enough and the forest thins into open tundra, flat and pale and merciless. Further still, the land breaks into ice canyons deep enough to swallow the seas, or climbs into mountains that seem to reach the stars. The Kaldreach does not repeat itself. It simply just keeps on going.
Above it all, the sky rarely cooperates. Mornings come grey and heavy more ofnte than not, but the nights are another matter. When the clouds finally break, the aurora spills across the dark in green and violet, bright enough to work by, bright enough to make the cold feel almost warm.
Living Things
Nothing survives out here by accident the creatures of Kaldreach are, almost without exception, touched by magic in some form, it's the only reason anything larger than a shivering thing manages to keep breathing through winters this deep. Even the beastfolk, for all their resilience, aren't equally built for it. A wolf finds the cold almost welcoming. A fox finds it something to survive. Not every kind of person was made for a place like this, as if the Kald was asking. The ones who weren't have had to learn the hard way, how to stay alive regardless.
What the land remembers
Magic does not simply vanish when something dies, it settles into the earth, and in a place saturated with as much of it as the Kaldreach, and how expansive that where you have stepped someone may have not stepped in thousands of years, that causes consequences in itself. Scattered throughout the region, hidden by time and distance, dungeons form naturally wherever magic has been allowed to pool and compress for long enough. Most take generations to be found, if they're found at all. What's inside them is never quite predictable, and never entirely safe. It is the duty of the Reachwardens to know this land better than anyone: to track what moves through it, to manage what threatens it, and to watch, quietly and carefully, for the things that wander in from outside it.
The Unseen Lands
In its name it explains itself, not every danger in Kaldreach announces itself with distance. Deadlands, patches of land twisted and hollowed by something the Kaldreach itself seems out of place, they appear without warning, scattered throughout the region rather than confined to a single edge or border. But nowhere worse than the center. At the heart of the Kaldreach lies the pole, the true north of this frozen world, ringed by the largest mountains that exist anywhere, a wall no one has ever crossed. the deadlands grow thickest the closer one gets to it. No expedition has returned with an answer. No map extends that far. Whatever is actually there remains, and may always remain entirely unknown.
